HD Hyundai’s Construction Equipment Division is leveraging digital technologies such as virtual reality (VR) and digital twins to enhance its technological competitiveness.
HD Hyundai XiteSolution held the opening ceremony of its “Virtual Training Center” at the HD Hyundai Global R&D Center (GRC) in Pangyo, Gyeonggi-do, on January 23, 2024 (Tuesday). Executives from the three construction equipment companies—HD Hyundai XiteSolution, HD Hyundai Construction Equipment, and HD Hyundai Infracore—including CEO Young-cheul Cho and CEO Dong-wook Lee of HD Hyundai XiteSolution, CEO Cheol-gon Choi of HD Hyundai Construction Equipment, and CEO Seung-hyun Oh of HD Hyundai Infracore were among the attendees at the event.
This newly established training center is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities including 15 RC models that mimic the workings of real construction equipment like excavators, wheel loaders, forklifts, and articulated dump trucks. It also houses an indoor training ground meticulously scaled down to 1:14 of an actual construction site, a VR experience zone within an excavator cabin, and a construction equipment remote control station.
The indoor training facility that mimics a construction site allows trainees to control RC models with the same controllers used on actual equipment. Donning VR goggles immerses users in a first-person perspective, replicating the sensation of operating the actual equipment; thus enhancing the overall realism of the radio-controlled (RC) model driving experience.
In the VR experience zone, users can step into the operator's cabin of an excavator and learn to control construction equipment in a simulated worksite using virtual reality. A key feature is the on-screen guidance that helps users learn the skills needed for the work.
The center will also feature a system for remotely controlling actual construction equipment located at domestic worksites including the Boryeong Test Site, which is approximately 130km from the GRC.
With the aim of enhancing employee awareness and comprehension of construction equipment, HD Hyundai XiteSolution will be implementing employee driving training at this facility. The VR simulation will not only allow for driving training without any time or space constraints but is also expected to be helpful in acquiring a construction equipment operator's license.
Furthermore, HD Hyundai XiteSolution harnesses the power of digital twin technology to take product verification to the next level. The company plans to evaluate product performance by controlling digital twin models and RC models in a virtual space based on real-world work scenarios. The data collected will then be used to improve product quality.
“We have created a platform for construction equipment training and product verification by integrating digital innovation technologies with construction equipment RC models. We will strive to manufacture high-quality equipment by enhancing our employees' understanding and interest in construction equipment,” said Ki-hyung Kim, head of HR Support at HD Hyundai XiteSolution. <End>
