Hyundai Doosan Infracore is actively utilizing big data to improve work efficiency and develop new products tailored to customer characteristics.
Hyundai Doosan Infracore, a subsidiary of Hyundai Genuine (Hyundai Heavy Industries Group’s construction equipment unit), recently announced a performance report on DI (Data Intelligence) 360, a big data collaboration platform, and a plan to promote a data-based business culture.
DI360 is a big data collaboration platform jointly developed by Hyundai Doosan Infracore with Palantir Technologies, the world’s leading big data company in the United States, and opened in 2020. The platform will enable the company to integrate data scattered throughout the company for quick analysis and sharing.
Hyundai Doosan Infracore has utilized the data analyzed through DI360 for the past year to improve productivity, implement the inventory management system, and develop new products.
Hyundai Doosan Infracore analyzed the equipment TMS (tele-management system) data in DI360 to develop new products. The analysis of TMS data of equipment scattered in each region showed that Korean customers consider fuel economy to be an important factor, North American customers value engine speed, and European customers prefer engine output when operating the equipment.
Korean customers, in particular, operate the equipment at the standard engine output as they consider fuel economy to be the top priority. In contrast, North American customers tend to operate at high engine output and speed for fast work using the maximum power of the equipment rather than fuel economy. European customers are similar to North American customers but do not set high engine speed just for fast work.
About half of the 21-ton wheel excavators sold by Hyundai Doosan Infracore to Europe operate at a sugar beet plant in Northeastern France. The TMS analysis confirmed that 50% of the operators used the equipment in Power+mode (maximum output mode). Therefore, the company focused on improving the Power+ mode performance for the 21-ton wheel excavator model VDK21W to be launched in the European market in the first half.
The DI360 collaboration platform is also useful for inventory and quality management. In the past, it took three weeks to process the data when calculating the lifespan of parts for construction equipment. However, DI360 reduced it to one day, and it led to higher customer satisfaction by improving the part life and performing preventive maintenance more effectively and quickly. Moreover, production efficiency has been improved greatly as the status of material delivery is checked every day, with the development of the Part Quality Index to check information such as the defect rate of suppliers in real time on one screen helping improve quality.
“DI360 enabled analyzing in real time the operation information of construction equipment sold worldwide and the market information in each country, allowing us to develop new products suitable for the specific market characteristics. We will do our best to satisfy customers by responding to customer requirements proactively through business innovation,” a Hyundai Doosan Infracore official said.
