HD Hyundai Infracore is embarking on a clean energy generation business using ammonia decomposition-derived hydrogen.
On the 4th (Monday), HD Hyundai Infracore announced that it has recently signed a strategic partnership with U.S.-based Amogy and SK Innovation for developing an ammonia decomposition-derived clean hydrogen power generation system.
This partnership aims to commercialize a hydrogen engine power generation system that uses clean hydrogen derived from ammonia decomposition as fuel by 2027.
HD Hyundai Infracore and Amogy are combining their respective products with the former developing a 22-liter hydrogen fuel cell engine for power generation and the latter developing the ‘ammonia cracker’, a device that decomposes ammonia to produce clean hydrogen.
Additionally, the three companies, HD Hyundai Infracore, Amogy, and SK Innovation, are set to cooperate to discover commercialization opportunities for their power generation solution currently in joint development.
HD Hyundai Infracore plans to enter the distributed power generation system market and the clean hydrogen power generation bidding market opened by the government through the clean ammonia-derived hydrogen power generation system currently in development.
Ammonia sustains a liquid state at higher temperatures than hydrogen, while being less prone to ignition and explosion, which is advantageous for transport and storage. Accordingly, liquefied ammonia is gaining traction as a realistic solution for clean hydrogen power generation.
An HD Hyundai Infracore official said, “We will actively contribute to kickstarting the clean hydrogen power generation market by integrating cutting-edge hydrogen engine technology and ammonia decomposition technology,” and added, “We are positioned to enhance commercialization and seize various business opportunities in the long term.”
Meanwhile, HD Hyundai Infracore's 11-liter hydrogen engine called 'HX12' was selected as the best product in the hydrogen industry (Best Pick, Top Award) by the media at the H2 MEET 2024 hydrogen industry exhibition held in September. <End>
