HD Hyundai Infracore (CEO Cho Yeong-cheol, Oh Seung-hyun), an affiliate of HD Hyundai Construction Equipment, is leading the way in localizing power generator systems powered by hydrogen-fueled engines.
HD Hyundai Infracore announced on the 8th (Thurs.) that it has won the order for the government’s first project to demonstrate a localized hydrogen-fueled engine generator sent up by the Korea Institute of Energy Technology Evaluation and Planning.
The project, which entails an investment of approximately KRW 14 billion up to June 2027, aims to localize and demonstrate a 500kWe high efficiency generator system for clean hydrogen and distributed power generation utilizing a hydrogen-fueled engine. If the demonstration is successful, the company is expected to discover various business models along with an analysis of the feasibility of the hydrogen engine generation system.
HD Hyundai Infracore is looking for ways to increase power generation efficiency through engine waste heat recovery and waste heat generation, along with the development of the hydrogen engine generator system.
In addition, the company plans to enter the clean hydrogen generation bidding market with Korea East-West Power, Korea Western Power, and Pyeongtaek Urban Corporation, which participated as demand companies after successfully carrying out this task, and to look for various business opportunities related to hydrogen engine generation, such as emergency power generation, the supply of renewable energy to industrial complexes, the supply of electricity to data centers, ship-based mobile charging, etc.
In the future, it is anticipated that the market demand for hydrogen engine generators will increase. MarketsandMarkets, a market research firm, has forecast that the global market for hydrogen generation will grow at an annual average rate of 10.2% over the next five years, rising from 158.8 billion dollars in 2023 to 257.9 billion dollars in 2028. Last May, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy opened the clean hydrogen generation bidding market for the first time in the world.
An executive of HD Hyundai Infracore said, “In carrying out this government-funded project, we look forward to securing performance for various hydrogen engine-related development and demonstration in addition to the 200kWe demonstration that was carried out through the existing self-investment. Based on this, we will be able to develop and supply a customized hydrogen generation system that meets the diverse needs of our customers.”
Meanwhile, HD Hyundai Infracore is also developing hydrogen-fueled engines that can be installed on trucks and buses, with the aim of starting mass production at the end of next year. It is also planning to unveil its hydrogen engine for vehicles and hydrogen generator set at H2MEET, the largest hydrogen industry exhibition in Korea, which is due to be held at KINTEX this September. <End>
